Should i get a boss foot pedal?

so i play in a band, and i have a hughes and kettner head. It was pretty expensive, and its a good head, but just not great distortion for my amp. so im thinking about getting a boss foot pedal, putting my amp on a dirty, but not extremely distorted channel, and just using the distortion from the boss pedal. is this a good idea?
