What is the connection between genes, protein synthesis, and phenotypes?

Genes, contained in DNA, code for proteins. Their codes are transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA), which is sent to the ribosomes to translate proteins. Phenotypes are the observable characteristics of an organism, which are determined by which proteins they express.
