I am trying to learn a way to help students of English to write with facility, please help.?

I am trying to help certain students of English who seem to know the mechanics of the language quite well, but who cannot write essays which highlight their talents. There is a disconnect between grammatical knowledge and the actual skill of writing. How can I help them to make the transition to good writing? I should mention that they are learning English as a foreign language.
